Second Life (www.secondlife.com) is a virtual world, entirely digitized and limited only by your imagination where a digitized version of yourself lives the life you want to, unrestricted by the limitations of real life. It has been featured in lots of news broadcasts; it is very popular as everyone wants to escape this world for a while.
The operators (potentially “you”) create and name digitized representatives of their (your) personality called “Avatars” and become SL Residents. The SL world is vast and your Avatar can explore every site (either by transport or independent flight) and shop at many virtual versions of RL world class venues. Virtual money can be purchased at thousands of kiosks, slowly earned or won / lost in gambling venues. These “Linden” dollars are as useful in the virtual world as coin is on your side of the monitor.
You can use the L$ to purchase virtual space called “SL Land” to create a home and / or a Virtual business in any way you can imagine. As you can create virtual representatives of your personality, you can do the same for your real life business and link the two worlds. Imagine the possibility, which is the world of SL!
Many support groups for many conditions have entered virtual representations of their causes. Persons with a disability world wide are attracted to the freedom of imagination that SL was built to provide and in these venues of support, they found gatherings of other avatars controlled by persons who could understand what life is on their side of the monitor.
The Multiple Sclerosis (SL) support group is one such group in Second Life. They meet at 11 am on Sundays (SL time appears to be Pacific Time equivalent) via an invite from group leader Kat Klata. Once you contact this resident and add her name to your buddy list / and join the group the invites will be sent to your resident avatar. Attached to the invite is a “transport link” to the meeting location and a basic theme. It is a good way to communicate and find out how MS is dealt with in other areas.
