Since April, 2009 The Prince George Multiple Sclerosis Support Team has hosted the Wellness Day Event to educate and connect the community of MS Patients located in Northern British Columbia / Yukon Territory, Canada on MS. This event is the product of a year's worth of planning by the MS Support team of Prince George based representatives of the Prince George MS Self Help Team (Website coming soon). The team is the MS Society of Canada's Prince George Chapter, Northern Health's Multiple Sclerosis Clinic attached to the University Hospital of Northern BC (AKA the hospital formerly known as Prince George Regional Hospital) and the Prince George MS Self Help Support Group
Our first event in April 2009 welcomed over 90 persons from the northern quarter of BC and the Yukon Territory, the logo was designed to promote the working partnership of the 3 support sides towards the event's success. Support was gathered from the Pharmaceutical companies that provide the Disease Modification Treatments for MS, thanks to Northern Health's influence. The supporters that arrived in 2009 came back and brought others. They came with high expectations for this year. They left anxious to return in 2011.
We all saw 24 new faces from the audience this year, several approached me to enquirer about the Self Help Group making it a success for our group locally. One person is even trying to renew a group in Quesnel, it could be a success for northern British Columbia. The same kind of things happened for the sponsors and they passed their thanks to everyone involved in the preparation. The MS Society of Canada, Prince George Chapter's region of responsibility is being considered (so far locally) for expansion locally due to the realization of the distance between Burnaby and Kamloops to the Central Interior and the remoteness of the communities near PG who are covered by those 2 Chapters and the MS Nurse was smiling wide so we assume it was a success for the clinic as well.
Speaking of the PGSHSG I will have at the next meeting about their on going support for next year's Event. We will have to again sponsor the promotional costs locally and the invites / time to prepare required for Northern Health and the local Chapter. It worked perfect this year. Both sides of the support triangle were maxed out on time and this had to be done to visualize the successful outcome all representatives expected. We thanked the participants who folded. It was a huge task that we had no time to do, the event could have been a failure without that effort. The event was well received and caused a positive reaction from the MS Society of Canada's BC Division and Northern Health ensuring the events continuation in the future, preferably in Prince George with all 3 sides of the triangle.
Our first guest speaker was Dr Micheal Yeung of the University of Calgary talking on the Future of MS Therapeutics (page 13 of this link). The talk was very interesting and highly educational for the audience. Sonja Leborgne, the Equipment Provision Program (EPP)Coordinator for BC Division gave a talk about what she covers and introduced a bit on the Volunteer Legal Advocacy program which will be covered more in October when the MS Society of Canada's Prince George Chapter will host an information session on this. Our final speaker was Tammy Benson from the Canadian Mental Health Association who gave a most compelling talk on their "Bounce-Back" program and handed out free DVDs without asking for proof of residencies. Free to those of us in BC, check it out to feel better about living in British Columbia, where anything can and usually does happen given the right opportunity.
