A new procedure was developed in Italy by Dr Paolo Zamboni . Dr. Zamboni, a former vascular surgeon and professor at the University of Ferrara in northern Italy, began asking questions about the debilitating condition a decade ago, when his wife Elena, now 51, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
Dr Zamboni studied the work of MS specialists and noted that MS Patients have higher levels of iron in their brains which were not caused by age. No one could fully explain this phenomenon and considered the excess iron a toxic byproduct of MS.
Dr Zamboni wondered if the iron came from blood improperly collecting in the brain. Using Ultrasound, he examined the necks of MS patients and made an extraordinary finding. Almost 100% of the patients had a narrowing, twisting or outright blockage in the veins that are supposed to flush blood from the brain. He then checked these veins in healthy people, and found none of these malformations. Nor did he find these blockages in those with other neurological conditions. What was equally astounding, was that not only was the blood not flowing out of the brain, it was "refluxing" reversing and flowing back upwards. Zamboni believes that as the blood moves into the brain, pressure builds in the veins, forcing blood into the brain's grey matter where it sets off a host of reactions, possibly explaining the symptoms of MS. The solution he used was to inflate the vein with a balloon and allow the blood to drain normally. He tried it on his wife and several MS patients They have had no more MS Attacks since having the vein opened but any damage done because of MS remained.
Much of the above was cut from diffrent websites talking at the time. I write this out in word as I read, The story was delivered in Canada by CTV's “W-5” news show in November of 2009 when this peice was conceved. The MS Society’s national office in Ottawa was bombarded shortly after by MS Patients like me from across the nation demanding further study. In December 2009 they called for tenders from researchers to conduct immediate study on this procedure.
At the time this article is being written, there is just one clinic in Canada (Toronto) which will test people to see if they have the vein problem. There is no word beyond an estimated 5 year (minimum) study period as to when the procedure will be available to correct it if it exists.
For updated information, the MS Society of Canada has up to date information at http://www.mssociety.ca/en/research/medmmo_20091021_faq.htm. Perhaps? Stay tuned to that website and see!

MS vein surgery innovator urges caution
ReplyDeleteA CBC news story where Dr Zamboni urges us with MS to consider ALL the risks involved and not to rush out and get the procedure done. Adapt and survive. Health Canada will open it up someday and we just have to survive until then. Like our motto- Adapt and Survive, survival being the key word.
Life is good on your side of the monitor so do not mess it up in the hopes that you might find a cure. The procedure is not without risks.
